Book Review: Doing the Right Thing by Paul Anderson (Janet Reno biography)
Doing the Right Thing is a biography of Janet Reno written by Paul Anderson, a news reporter from Miami Herald. Reno actually took part in the book’s writing process. This, however, is not an official biography. Yet it is like her official background, since it includes an accounting of Reno’s standpoints rather than reviewing others’ points of view. It is described as more of a “historical reporting” than an “investigative reporting.”
Anderson started writing the book just months after Janet Reno was appointed as Attorney General. Through the book, readers can clearly see her nature. It also supplies views as to how she would handle herself as the governor of the state of Florida.
Janet Reno is a simple and plain-spoken individual who, in her character, does not even sound like someone who is in politics. At one point, she was asked about her sexual preference, since she was thought of as a lesbian, she straightforwardly answered, “No, I’m just a spinster.” Right after reading through the book, one will ultimately find her statement convincing.
As a politician, and a Democrat at that, Janet Reno is one who does not take crime lightly. She, as with anyone who has their own opinion, also has subtle yet complex insights on crime and punishment. For instance, she implemented capital punishment since she was obligated to do so, but she is truly against it. She has had several criminals put on trial and has practiced it for many years. She as well has dedicated herself to representing defendant’s rights and engaging in victims’ advocacy organizations.
The book’s title, Doing the Right Thing, is exactly how she presents herself to everyone. She tries to do her best in every circumstance that comes along the way.
