DLA Piper
With over 3,700 lawyers in 25 countries and 65 offices scattered in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, DLA Piper is undeniably one of the world’s largest law firms. In 2007, the law firm reportedly raised over $2.1 billion in revenues, making it one of the world’s highest grossing law firms.
DLA Piper was formed when Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich LLP of San Diego, UK’s DLA LLP (previously known as Dibb Lupton Alsop), and Piper Rudnick LLP merged in 2005. Its three chief executive officers — Nigel Knowles, Frank Burch, and Lee Miller — previously served as managing partners of DLA, Piper and Marbury, and Rudnick & Wolfe.
The firm’s clients range from emerging businesses to national and multinational enterprises. At present, it represents more than half of Fortune 500’s top 250 clients. DLA Piper operates with its 13 core service groups namely commercial contracts; corporate; employment, pensions, and benefits; finance; intellectual property; international arbitration; litigation and arbitration; projects and infrastructure; real estate; regulatory and government affairs; restructuring; tax; technology and media.
DLA Piper delivers excellent services that lead to long term relationships based on honesty and respect. Its lawyers/employees value diversity and respect for individuals. They excel in teamwork and always put their clients’ interests ahead of the firm’s. The law firm also makes it a point to gain substantial knowledge about their clients’ businesses and interests, as well as the various sectors their clients work with. This is essential in order to promote a strong and healthy relationship with the companies/people they serve. DLA Piper’s employees are also encouraged to leave a positive impression on their clients.
Like most companies and law firms, DLA Piper extends their support to politicians and candidates. The firm contributed to the political causes of both the Democrats and Republicans in the 2008 Presidential primaries.
Proof of the firm’s excellent performance and achievement are the numerous awards and recognitions DLA Piper has received over the years. For 2008, during the Legal Business Awards, the firm was named the Dispute Resolution Team of the Year. In 2007, the firm received several awards including one from the British Legal Awards as the TMT/IP Team of the Year. DLA Piper was also ranked 8th on Yale Law Women’s 2007 Top Ten Family-Friendly Firms.
DLA Piper’s global board chair is Democratic Senator George Mitchell, recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and UNESCO’s Peace Prize. He is also one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2008.
