Jones Day
With 30 offices and around 2,200 attorneys, Jones Day is definitely one of the largest law firms in the world. In terms of revenue, Jones Day was ranked 8th largest in the world in 2006. Its estimated current revenue is $1.5 billion. Established on March 1, 1893 by Judge Edwin J. Blandin and William Lowe Rice, Jones Day’s earliest clients were mostly based in Ohio, where their Cleveland headquarters is located. Most of their clients were in the utilities and railroads business.
In 1939, Jones, Day, Cockley & Reavis was formed as a result of a merger between the firm Tolles, Hogsett & Glinn and another Cleveland firm. By 1946, Jones Day was able to open its first office outside of the Ohio area when it established its Washington, D.C. counterpart. In 1952, the firm represented a Youngstown, Ohio steel mill in the famous case Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company vs. Sawyer. In 1967, the firm became known as Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue when it undertook a merger with Washington, D.C.-based Pogue and Neal. Several years later, in 1980, the firm opened its Columbus, Ohio office. It was followed by the opening of the firm’s Dallas office in 1981.
The year 1986 was a memorable one for the firm as Jones Day began its international expansion after successfully merging with the 75-attorney strong boutique law firm Surrey & Morse. Surrey and Morse had offices in London, Paris, and Riyadh which may have contributed to Jones Day’s international expansion.
Through the years, Jones Day has banked on its strong client focus as well as on its other performance strengths including depth of experience and a team of service and team-oriented, highly skilled, and professional workforce. Jones Day is also proud about the fact that they are a one-firm organization.
Another reason for the firm’s continuous surge is its Litigation Department. In fact, Jones Day was the recipient of the first ever Litigation Department of the Year award, which was given by American Lawyer magazine. It is also one of only two firms recognized by BTI Consulting Group, Inc. for its brand of client service; and the firm has even been elevated to the hall of fame status.
Jones Day’s strengths in the Litigation Department include antitrust or competition law, labor and employment, and products liability.
The firm’s current managing partner is Stephen J. Brogan. Jones Day was recognized as Vault 100’s 22nd most prestigious law firms in 2008 and has received numerous awards over the years.
