McGuireWoods LLP is a general practice law firm based in Richmond, Virginia that boasts of approximately 900 lawyers and 17 offices in the United States and in strategic locations worldwide. The firm was founded in 1834 when lawyer Egbert R. Watson began his practice in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Watson partnered with George Perkins in 1870 and eventually, in 1936, the firm’s name was changed to Perkins, Battle & Minor. In 1961, Perkins, Battle & Minor merged with a firm called Bremner Neal Harris and Battle, which resulted to the formation of Battle Neal Harris Minor and Williams. Aside from Charlottesville, Bremmer Neal Harris and Battle also served clients in Richmond.

The firm adopted the name McGuire Woods & Battle in 1966. The firm expanded through mergers and changed names several times over the years. It opened its Washington office in 1984 while its Brussels, Belgium office, the first one outside of the U.S., opened in 1990. Four years after, the firm opened its Almaty, Kazakhstan office and another U.S. branch, this time in Jacksonville, Florida. The law firm continued to expand over the years in terms of manpower and service area.

In the year 2000, the firm changed its name to McGuireWoods LLP. This year, 2008, the firm completed a merger with a 145-attorney strong North Carolina-based law firm called Helms Mulliss & Wicker, PLLC which has offices in both Raleigh and Wilmington.

In 2008, the firm was included in the BTI Client Service A-Team for the 3rd consecutive year. In the 2009 edition of Best Lawyers in America, 158 McGuireWoods lawyers were cited.

In honor of the firm’s commitment to extending legal assistance to those who cannot afford one, McGuireWoods was named twice (2005 and 2006) in the Pro Bono Initiative’s Honor Roll.
