Ropes & Gray
Ropes & Gray LLP was founded by John Codman Ropes and John Chipman Gray in 1865. Its main office is in Boston, Massachusetts but it also has offices in New York City, Palo Alto, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Hong Kong and Tokyo. Considered a leader in the field of intellectual property law, Ropes & Gray’s other major practice areas are corporate law, litigation, antitrust, bankruptcy and business restructuring, international, tax and benefits, labor and employment, and government relations.
The firm’s primary concern is to form strong client relationships while ensuring high quality legal advice to its clients who range from small and large companies to financial institutions, government agencies, colleges and universities, hospitals and healthcare groups, to families and individuals.
Ropes & Gray also works with a positive outlook while diligently following the highest service and ethical standards. The firm also recognizes the importance of diversity in the workplace and has, therefore, strived to create an environment where everyone is appreciated regardless of his race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and family structure. In fact, the firm was one of the few that adopted social advances at an early stage when it began hiring women as associates way back 1942. The firm has a Diversity Committee that is tasked with developing programs and activities related to the promotion and advancement of diversity.
Aside from its commitment to diversity, Ropes & Gray also encourages its lawyers to embrace a wide range of pro bono activities. This dedication is a reflection of the vision of Ropes & Gray’s founders who established the firm to effectively address public issues and concerns. The firm’s Pro Bono Committee identified and considers prospective initiatives. The committee also comes up with various extensive pro bono activities like the Political Asylum/Immigration Representation (“PAIR”) Project, Massachusetts Legal Clinic for the Homeless (MLCH), New York City Bankruptcy Assistance Project and the Suffolk Probate Court – Lawyer for the Day Program.
With over 850 lawyers worldwide, Rope & Gray has consistently received recognition and high rankings from various publications like Vault, Best Lawyers, Chambers and The American Lawyers. One of the most recent recognitions the firm received is the inclusion of 107 Ropes & Gray lawyers in Best Lawyers in America 2008. Ropes & Gray has also been included in Vault.com’s “Top Twenty” rankings for “Best in Diversity” from 2004 to 2007.
